HuntsVille Alabama a wonderful place that supplied many new ideas and lovely Southern Friends

Here I am in Huntsville with Jodi who was one of my hostess's. We went to Harrison Brothers Hardware...a fabulous OLD hardware store that is owned by the city and has all of the old things in an old store and new things to buy...it was so wonderful to visit. If you are ever in Huntsville this is a must see!
There were so many things on the old shelves that I remember and in piles on surfaces...I remember going to an old store like this was I was teeny in my Grandmother's town in Wardner BC Canada....this just took me right back there...so lovely. I bought three pumpkins out of old corragated metal that were polka dotted and the lady looked at me like I was nuts...she said "what are you going to do with those big pumpkins? "I said "decorate with them". She just smiled....I could tell what she was thinking...
r
Loved how the floors were rickety and uneven like the old days....everything about this was charming....I love to see history and art and I got to see both on this trip. The South has lovely things to see always.
This was such a lovely art show and I am a new fan of this guy!
Next, Jodi took me to the Alabama Museum of art. It was a wonderful Museum and the colors and space inside were fabulous.
We saw this show and they let me take photos...I am a new fan of Sloan's ( a man)!

The colors are enchanting and beautiful and his gift of putting together stories is wonderful and so fun to see in person. This would translate to quilts well I think...
These pieces are large...I would guess 45" inches by 50" and up....the colors are incredible and the things he uses like piano keys and spoons and radios and clocks and car speedometers are so great.
Isn't this inspiring? Can you pull ideas out of these images for your stories and your art work? I think these are so much fun and if I didn't know better I would think the little girl with the fudgecycle in the photo with the cars is me....
Hope this brings some joy to you...you sure did me!

More Inspiration from the Islands.....

While on Maui we walked around for inspiration and color and creativity and this is what I found....Louie Vuitton has awesome windows and I am sure purses...not that I could ever afford one....I didn't bother going inside...

I later figured out that these dots were inspired by a Japanese woman who lives in a mental facility and paints....she has sold many paintings for thousands and thousands of dollars...she wears polka dot clothes and she wears pink wigs....very "out there"-I love her stuff!
Is it any wonder she lives in a mental facility? Yikes...I love pattern but. This lady Yayoi Kusama is very talented but in the 60's she painted dots on naked bodies and alot of people remember that and don't like her. I think her stuff is quite wonderful really and would love to watch her. She is alot older now and off the idea of painting boides...why would ANYONE want to do this? I like art on something that can last...otherwise why do it? The stuff that is done to last one day is mostly junk (in my opinion and as I said to a professor "I am not interested in what people of the opposite view think" - I still think art should be uplifting and not shocking. Otherwise, why bother?

Ok, back to Hawaii
This is a beautiful fountain outside our door at Aina Nalu.....it doesn't like like much here but in person it is quite wonderful....we stopped there everyday....

Loved this sailor...
Mark loved this palm tree. and me too...isn't it something and look how the colors include lavendar...the colors there are amazing...
I took a photo because I love that board in the back...I bought three children's t-shirts and something else...yikes....Isn't this girl pretty? They all are there....
If I lived there I could imagine trying to make a lamp like this...or I guess if I lived there it would be because I won the lotto and I could buy this....
Here we are at the beach and we ordered sweet potato fries and ice tea...I felt like a millionare....So beautiful and peaceful....
Had this fruit in the refrig for snacks...so good and fresh!
The best fried rice you would ever have! We took it home and it lasted three more days....
Macadamia pancakes...I think there was pineapple in there too....
A hawaiian styple salad...delicious
Mark plays golf, I quilt back at the condo
Golf coarses are beautiful
We had lunch here several times...BEAUTIFUL beach here!
People watching the sun as it went down in Lahaina
Mark deep in thought before breakfast- it is around 7:30 am...but then he gets his food
The best radio station _all Hawaiian and fun to listen to
The absolute best ice cream you could ever ever eat
Shave ice with creamcycle syrup, root beer and pineapple...down in the bottom is macadamia nut ice cream....we only did this twice but I would have done it more if I knew it wasn't so many calories...luckily we did tons of walking....
Love the image of surfboards and color...
Inspiring and fun and being in a new environment always makes for more quilt ideas and better creativity....
Now I am off to Huntsville Alabama and then Memphis Tennesssee-stay tuned for more photos....and Check out my other blog which has a new template and stories and photos of my trip to Medford Oregon and Ashland....Marylouweidman.blogspot.com
